2021 Château de la Crée Maranges Sur le Bois

Located in Maranges, Burgundy, France, this French Chardonnay derives its name from its picturesque surroundings. “Sur Le Bois,” meaning “affected by the woods,” pays homage to the fact that the vineyard is enveloped by a serene forest. Situated in the heart of Maranges, it holds a prominent position compared to the nearby En Goty vineyard. What sets Sur Le Bois apart is its unique composition. The winemaking process further enhances its character, as it undergoes fermentation and aging in a combination of concrete eggs and a small percentage of new oak barrels. This method allows for the essence of the wine to shine, crafting a vibrant, fruity, and zesty flavor profile. 

The 2021 growing season in Burgundy produced wines with high acidity that is reflected in the 2021 Sur le Bois Chardonnay. Balanced between gentle roundness and freshness, this wine finishes with subtle umami notes. As noted by our winemaker for Domaine Evenstad and Château de la Crée, Pablo Bosch, this wine expresses itself in a bright essence in the mid-palette with lingering fruit notes in the finish. The one-of-a-kind soil composition of Sur le Bois brought forward very complex flavors. It opens with a taste of licorice complemented by a warm and creamy note of caramel. A unique layer of smokey minerality is added to this wine’s complexity. Only 120 bottles are available, making each sip a truly exclusive experience.
