September 11, 2024 / News Introducing the Domaine Evenstad Collection
Grace and Ken Evenstad, Founders of Domaine Serene and pioneers of Oregon winemaking, fulfilled a lifelong dream when they purchased a storied château, winery, and vineyards in the Côte de Beaune of Burgundy in 2015. Located in the picturesque village of Santenay, the history of Château de la Crée traces its roots back to 1431, when it was built by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to Philip the Good, the Third Duke of Burgundy, and his wife, Guigone de Salins. That dream continues to evolve and grow today with the creation of Domaine Evenstad.
The Vineyards
Bonnes-Mares
Bonne-Mares Grand Cru is a highly esteemed vineyard located in the Côte de Nuits, straddling the border between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. Spanning 15.8 hectares, it benefits from the unique characteristics of both appellations. The vineyard is situated on a gentle slope with east orientation and altitudes averaging between 250 and 280 meters. While the soil is brown or reddish and mostly light and gravelly, the sub-soil consists of limestone and white marl.

Bourgogne Côte d’Or
The Bourgogne Côte d’Or appellation stretches 65 kilometers from Dijon to the Maranges, covering the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Established in 2017, this designation highlights wines from vineyards on ancient alluvial soils between 200-450 meters, benefiting from temperate, dry conditions and southeast-facing slopes.

Established as an AOC in 1936, its east-facing vineyards at 250-300 meters benefit from shallow soils over Jurassic limestone, promoting deep root growth and excellent drainage.

The Vineyards
Clos de Vougeot
Clos de Vougeot, a 50.59-hectare vineyard in Côte de Nuits, has remained intact since its founding by Cîteaux monks around 1110 AD. Surrounded by Musigny and Grands-Échezeaux, it earned Grand Cru status in 1937 and produces top Burgundy reds. Its soils range from gravelly limestone on the upper slopes to clay-rich marl below. The vineyard’s château, a symbol of Burgundy’s wine heritage, houses the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

The Vineyards
Côte de Nuits-Villages
These terroirs, designated with the Village appellation in 1964, span the southern Côte de Nuits, including Corgoloin, which borders the Côte de Beaune, and extend to Brochon and Fixin in the north. They produce both red (Pinot Noir) and white (Chardonnay) wines. Wines from a specific Climat can feature its name on the label. The vineyards have gentle slopes with diverse soils, including limy brown soils, pebbly scree, and deeper alluvial layers, reflecting the region's varied geology.
